What do you mean they don’t require MFA? That’s completely unacceptable for any system containing citizens’ personal information.
I’m generally supportive of technologies that help law enforcement prevent and solve crimes. At the same time, I strongly believe that unauthorized or inappropriate access to sensitive data must be prevented.
While I believe the overwhelming majority of law enforcement officers use these systems responsibly, the fact remains that my personal information is stored and can be accessed by any requesting officer with insufficient safeguards. That is not acceptable.
For example, my driver’s license and license plate information were queried more than 100 times over a five-year period by various law enforcement agencies, including at times when I was not out in public and there should have been n reason to query me. I have many friends in law enforcement, so it’s entirely possible those searches were conducted by people I know. Regardless of who performed them, it demonstrates that these systems can be misused.
At a minimum, every search that returns personal information should require the officer to enter a valid case number, CAD entry number, or incident report (ICR) number before the data is released.
Requiring a documented investigative purpose would create accountability, discourage misuse, and provide a meaningful audit trail.
OCR (Optical Character Readers/Recognition) are wildly inaccurate. B’s look like 8’s, D’s look like B’s, 0 and O are unable to be deciphered on a routine basis. I use LPR software to support my customers retail establishments, and their accuracy sucks.
I have hear other creators talking about Flock and similar cameras being able to record the SIM/IMEI number of cell phones / integrated car phones (onstar) and other data, I have not seen any of this in person, does it?
Overall, the surveillance state is becoming overwhelming for citizens. We have to stop it at some point, or we will fall to the government. I was the government for a while, and left.
