New to 2A, what else can I print?

Used to be mostly against 2A, it was the scare factor. I had gone hunting with my dad and grandfather when I was young, but it wasn’t really my thing. Late last year, my brother and some other family members invited me to a couple of range days. Between that, the new laws being passed, and world events, I made the decision to exercise my right.

A couple months ago, I got a S&W M&P9 2.0 Compact. After handling an assortment of handguns, it just kind of felt right in my hand, and the price wasn’t bad. Before I had a chance to take it to the next range day, I went down the rabbit hole of what can I print for it. I live in NC, and there aren’t too many restrictions on what I can and can’t do.

Started off with some mag extensions in PETG. These add +4 to the factory 15 round magazines.

They worked really well. Out of 500 rounds, there was only 2 failures where the spring jammed itself next to the follower. So I got some +10% power Wolff springs, and that solved the issue.

Now, what do I do with the factory springs? Was able to find a model of a fully printable magazine. I was kind of skeptical. Figured might as well try it and out and see. Printed with LM sparkle green, and PM PETG orange:

It’s a 15 round model, but I was only ever able to load 14. When I was able to test at the range, it fired all but the last round. Extremely surprised that it worked. The only issue was after an hour or so in the sun, it ended up warping:

Got some PM PET-GF to try out. Need to work on tolerances with this new material, the follower isn’t able to slide all the way up.

Does anyone have suggestions on what else I can explore printing?

This is definitely a rabbit hole that can go as deep as you want it to. I have found a few things I want to try but haven’t tuned my machine to the point I would feel comfortable yet. I love what you have started with here though.

For 2a prints avoid petg just because the lack of elasticity petg is to ridged and will shatter/explode stick to pla plus pa6 or better pet gf or cf petg is sort of a no no in the 2a world. It is ok for grips or hand stops something that isn’t load bearing

This is the way.

Siraya Tech PET-CF is great and relatively cheap.

It is seriously my favorite their fde and odg :pinched_fingers:t3: prints sooooooooo good and not to mention it goes on sale all the time! For us poors :rofl:

you can go as far down the rabbit hole as you wish to. PETg isnt a good material for 2A prints though, due to the way that it fails. I run mostly PA6 cf, but am playing around with some PA12 to see if it does any better. Depending on your states laws… you could even go as far as printing the recievers for an AR-15 or AR-10… though do keep in mind if you go that far, and do an AR-10 platform, that there are 3 different commercial patterns for parts… Where as the AR-15 is fully standardized. I currently have 2 projects in the works for AR-15s and both are printed as much as possible, with all the “hard parts” being from parts kits. I have heard PET-gf is good for it, but have yet to try any of it for myself.

I mean as long as 2a prints and alike are allowed here I am more than willing to do some post for it lol

They are more than allowed, they are expected here! Discord had rules against 2A and firearms. This forum is much more free.

Meant to do a follow up and got distracted. Had a range day last week and was able to test out the PET-GF mags. Ended up wet sanding the outsides with 400 grit so that they would smoothly slide in and out of the mag well. They held up in the sun just fine. The issue of only being able to load 14 and only being able to shoot 13 is still present. But having the additional mags available helps. There was a 3rd mag, but I got a little too torch happy and it warped slightly, so will have to redo that one.

Found a good mag holster model on makerworld. Uses an M3 screw and nut to adjust the retention. Wanted something very simple. I’m happy with these.

I caught the itch and decided to jump for a Foxtrot Mike VFM-9. Still hasn’t shipped yet, I was told they announced some models were going to be discontinued, so their volume has been high. Planning to print an angled grip and some m-lok covers for the hand guard. Will definitely post some updates once I get that sorted out.

Would love to print a can. But it’s my understanding that currently to legally do that involves some forms, some taxes, and other stuff that doesn’t really make it worth while for me right now. Maybe things will change in the future?

Printing a lower/receiver (whatever you want to call them) isn’t quite on my list yet. It’ll definitely be an option in the future once I get more familiar with how stuff works and all that. Very interested in seeing what other people have done!

you still have to form 1 the item, and it is technically registered, but they done away with the $200 tax stamp fee

and with the $200 fee being gone, I am tempted to send in 10 form 1s and print out quite a few for testing purposes… of course imma melt one or two down in the process lol
